Vatican City, LOGIC.co.id – The Vatican is mourning the loss of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. He died at his residence, Casa Santa Marta, in Vatican City.
The Pope's death was officially announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, at 9:45 a.m. local time.
“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with deep sorrow that I must announce the passing of our Holy Father, Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of God and His Church,” said Cardinal Farrell.
“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love—especially for the poorest and most marginalized.”
Health Journey Leading Up to His Passing
Pope Francis had been hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome since February 14, 2025, following several days of bronchitis. On February 18, doctors diagnosed him with bilateral pneumonia, which worsened his condition.
After 38 days of treatment, he returned to Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery. However, his health continued to decline until his passing on Easter Monday morning.
It is known that Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, had struggled with respiratory issues since his youth. In 1957, he underwent surgery to remove part of his lung due to a severe infection.
Funeral Preparations and Final Wishes
In April 2024, Pope Francis approved the latest edition of the funeral liturgy for Popes, Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, which will be used during his funeral Mass, with the date to be announced soon.
The updated liturgy includes new guidelines, such as the immediate placement of the body into the coffin and the official declaration of death taking place in a chapel rather than in the death chamber.
According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, Pope Francis personally requested a simple funeral service that emphasizes the Church’s faith in the risen Christ.
“This renewed rite aims to underline that the funeral of a Pope is that of a shepherd and disciple of Christ—not a worldly figure of power,” Ravelli explained.
Pope Francis is remembered as a loving, humble, and steadfast leader who championed humanitarian values. The world now mourns his passing, but the spirit of his service will live on in the hearts of Catholics and people around the globe.
