Covid-19 Reemerges in Indonesia, Health Ministry Urges Caution Over New Variants

Jakarta, LOGIC.co.idIndonesia's Ministry of Health has confirmed seven new Covid-19 cases detected over the past week. This finding has prompted heightened vigilance from the government, especially amid a surge of cases in neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, stated that the government has issued a circular letter as an early preventive measure.

"The Ministry of Health has distributed a letter to all health offices across Indonesia. This is a precautionary step, as we are aware that several neighboring countries are experiencing a rise in Covid-19 cases," said Hasan during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday (June 3, 2025).

Hasan emphasized that although the number of detected cases remains relatively low, it is essential to remain alert. According to Ministry data, the current positivity rate stands at 3.68%, meaning approximately 4 out of every 100 tested samples returned positive results.

"Even though the number is small, we must not become complacent. Especially if nearby countries are seeing a spike, we must be prepared," Hasan added.

He also urged the public to resume clean and healthy living habits as a form of self-protection. Practices such as regular handwashing and wearing masks when experiencing flu symptoms should be reinstated, even if they are not necessarily related to Covid-19.

"If you're feeling unwell or beginning to catch a cold, it's best to wear a mask to avoid infecting others. It's a simple yet effective preventive step," he explained.

Previously, the Ministry of Health reported seven Covid-19 cases detected between May 25 and May 31, 2025. At that time, the positivity rate was recorded at 2.05%, or approximately 2 out of every 100 tested individuals.

In response to the rising trend of regional cases, the Ministry has issued Circular Letter No. HK.02.02/C/1675/2025 concerning Alertness to the Rise in Covid-19 Cases on May 23, 2025. The letter was released following spikes in infections in countries such as Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Variants of concern include XEC and JN.1 reported in Thailand, LF.7 and NB.1.8 in Singapore, JN.1 in Hong Kong, and XEC in Malaysia.

The government reaffirmed that although the domestic situation remains under control, the public must not let their guard down and should continue observing health protocols to prevent further spread.
