Indonesia, LOGIC.co.id – The Indonesian government is working to repatriate Reynhard Sinaga, the convicted sex offender responsible for the largest rape case in British legal history. Currently serving a life sentence in the United Kingdom, Sinaga may be transferred to Indonesia to serve his sentence.
This effort is being led by Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections (Kemenko Kumham Imipas), which is negotiating with British authorities.
Ahmad Usmarwi, the ministry’s Special Staff for International Relations, emphasized that the government is committed to bringing Sinaga back to Indonesia.
"We are making every possible effort to repatriate him," Usmarwi stated on Tuesday (Feb 4, 2025).
Why Indonesia Wants to Bring Reynhard Sinaga Home
In the coming weeks, the Indonesian government plans to hold negotiations with the British Embassy to discuss repatriation arrangements.
"We hope to make this happen," Usmarwi added.
He explained that discussions with UK authorities are ongoing to develop a framework for Sinaga’s return. Additionally, pressure from Sinaga’s family has been a key factor driving this effort.
"The request from his parents has strengthened our commitment to repatriate him," he said.
However, Usmarwi clarified that this process is different from the repatriation of Indonesian prisoners from countries like Australia, the Philippines, and France.
"What we are proposing is a prisoner exchange, not a simple repatriation," he explained.
The Case of Reynhard Sinaga: Britain’s Most Prolific Sex Offender
In 2020, a Manchester court sentenced Reynhard Sinaga to life in prison after convicting him of 159 sexual offenses, including the rape of 136 men in the UK between 2015 and 2017.
Described as the most dangerous sex predator in British legal history, Sinaga is currently imprisoned at HMP Wakefield, a maximum-security facility in Yorkshire housing around 800 high-risk criminals.
Recently, he was reportedly attacked by fellow inmates due to the nature of his crimes. According to a BBC report on Sunday (Dec 15, 2024), Sinaga sustained serious injuries in a violent prison altercation.
"Reynhard is arrogant and universally despised. He is a prime target in prison because of the horrific nature of his crimes," a source told reporters.
Prison officers intervened before the attack escalated further.
Who Is Reynhard Sinaga?
Born in Jambi, Indonesia, on February 19, 1983, Reynhard Sinaga completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Indonesia in 2006 before moving to the UK for further education.
He earned two master’s degrees from the University of Manchester, one in urban planning (2009) and another in sociology (2011). He later enrolled in a PhD program in human geography at the University of Leeds but never completed it.
His crimes came to light in June 2017 when one of his victims regained consciousness during an assault and managed to fight back. A police investigation later uncovered hundreds of video recordings documenting Sinaga’s abuse of unconscious men.
To this day, Reynhard Sinaga’s case remains one of the most shocking sex crime scandals in British history. The Indonesian government continues its diplomatic efforts to bring him back through a prisoner exchange agreement with the UK.
