Solo, Indonesia, LOGIC.co.id - The 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), through his legal team, is currently considering legal action against individuals who continue to spread long-standing rumors regarding alleged fake diplomas.
This was conveyed by Jokowi’s legal representative, Yakub Hasibuan, after meeting with the president at his residence on Jalan Kutai Utara, Sumber Subdistrict, Banjarsari District, Solo City, Central Java, on Wednesday (April 9, 2025) afternoon.
"Nothing too specific, really, just general matters. We also discussed the recent hot issues, including Mr. Jokowi's diploma controversy," said Yakub.
Yakub, the son of senior lawyer Otto Hasibuan, explained that accusations regarding a fake diploma have been circulating repeatedly since 2023. The issue was even brought to court at the Central Jakarta District Court (PN Jakpus), but the lawsuit was won by Jokowi’s side.
"We already won. The lawsuit from the opposing party was dismissed. We’re puzzled as to why this issue keeps being brought up again," Yakub stated.
He emphasized that Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has issued an official clarification confirming the authenticity of Jokowi’s diploma.
"The authorized institution, including UGM, has clearly stated that Mr. Jokowi’s diploma is legitimate. He is indeed a graduate of UGM," he added.
Considering Legal Action
Although the issue has been repeatedly denied, the fake diploma slander continues to surface, even after Jokowi no longer serves as President of Indonesia.
Yakub mentioned that they are now considering legal steps against those spreading slanderous and unlawful accusations.
"We see certain individuals starting to employ unlawful tactics. This now enters the realm of spreading false information and could be considered defamation," Yakub explained.
He added that the decision to pursue legal action has been discussed with Jokowi. Since two years ago, Jokowi has granted legal authority to his team, although no action had previously been taken.
"Back then, Mr. Jokowi didn’t want to respond through legal channels, perhaps due to the nature of the issue. But now, even though he’s no longer President, the personal attacks continue," said Yakub.
"We believe it’s time to consider legal measures so that the same defamation doesn’t keep happening," he concluded.
