LOGIC.co.id – Russian tech giant Yandex is set to invest in Indonesia, particularly in digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI). The Indonesian government views this as a positive move, strengthening international partnerships in the technology sector.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital, Nezar Patria, confirmed Yandex’s interest in Indonesia as part of an expanding bilateral relationship. “This is a result of our ongoing international cooperation, not only with Russia but also with other nations like China, the United States, and Europe,” he stated during the launch event of the UNDP report on digital transformation titled Bright Prospect, Lingering Shadows, held in Jakarta on Monday (November 11).

Yandex Interested in Digital Infrastructure and AI Talent Development

Yandex, often referred to as “Russia’s Google,” has expressed interest in developing Indonesia’s digital infrastructure, including data centers, as well as collaborating in AI and digital talent development. “They also want to explore opportunities to support local digital talent in the AI field,” Nezar added.

Although the exact investment value remains undisclosed, Nezar emphasized that Yandex, along with any foreign entities seeking to operate in Indonesia, must comply with local regulations, including content management standards.

Government Supports AI Ecosystem Development in Indonesia

In a meeting held on Thursday (November 7), Minister of Communications and Digital Meutya Hafid, alongside Nezar Patria, met with Yandex Search CEO Alexander Popovsky to discuss Yandex’s investment plans in Indonesia. Meutya welcomed Yandex’s interest in enhancing Indonesia’s AI ecosystem, seeing it as a strategic move that aligns with the country’s digital economy ambitions.

“The potential of artificial intelligence in Indonesia is immense. By 2030, Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is projected to grow by 12 percent, or an additional USD 366 billion, due to AI-driven advancements. Therefore, we fully support Yandex’s plans to expand its investments here,” Meutya said in an official statement.

Positive Impact of Yandex Investment Expected in Indonesia

Yandex’s investment is anticipated to not only enhance Indonesia’s digital infrastructure but also accelerate AI development. This move aligns with the government’s vision to position Indonesia as a leading player in the digital economy within Southeast Asia.
