LOGIC.co.id – The United States and Fiji have begun discussions about deeper military cooperation amid increasing geopolitical competition between Washington and Beijing in the South Pacific region. The Pentagon has stated that these talks include a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) that would allow the presence of U.S. forces in Fiji to support joint exercises and regular military engagements.

Historic Visit by U.S. Secretary of Defense

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin made history as the first Pentagon official to visit Fiji on Saturday (23/11). This visit is part of his brief tour of the Asia-Pacific region, which includes stops in Australia, the Philippines, and Laos. In his statement, Austin emphasized that the SOFA agreement would serve as an important framework to enhance military cooperation between the two countries without establishing permanent military bases in Fiji.
“This agreement allows us to directly support Fiji and conduct joint training more routinely, without discussing the construction of military bases,” Austin explained.

Fiji: A Strategic Location Amid Geopolitical Rivalry

Fiji, as a strategically located island nation in the South Pacific, has become a focal point in the U.S.-China rivalry. Both countries are striving to expand their influence in the region through various approaches, ranging from economic diplomacy to military partnerships. In recent years, Beijing has increased its presence through infrastructure investments and economic aid, while the U.S. has strengthened ties with its Pacific allies, including Fiji.

Statement from Fiji’s Prime Minister

Fiji’s Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, welcomed Austin’s visit, calling it a “historic moment in the relationship between Fiji and the United States.” Though known for his pro-Western stance, Rabuka has recently forged cooperation with China, including trade and Mandarin language education agreements. In his speech, Rabuka emphasized the importance of peace amid global tensions.
“We are all here to discuss how to maintain, protect, and promote peace,” Rabuka said.

The Strategic Role of the South Pacific

The South Pacific holds a significant position in global geopolitics. As a major trade route and a region rich in marine resources, it has become an arena of competition between great powers. The United States, through agreements such as SOFA, seeks to reaffirm its commitment to security and stability in the region.
On the other hand, Fiji has benefited from Chinese investments under the Belt and Road Initiative, which includes infrastructure projects such as ports, highways, and public facilities.

This military cooperation discussion reflects the U.S. effort to strengthen its strategic presence in the South Pacific. By balancing its relationships with both the U.S. and China, Fiji can play a key role in fostering regional stability while capitalizing on economic opportunities from both sides.
